Netflix, Inc. is a subscription streaming entertainment production and services company based in Los Gatos, California. It was first founded on August 29, 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in Scotts Valley, California. Today, Netflix, Inc. has paid subscribers in more than 190 countries, including Argentina (4.97 million users), Australia (6.17 million users), Brazil (17.86 million users) and Germany (10.67 million users).
Netflix, Inc. provides its customers with the ability to watch streaming content through a number of internet-connected devices, including TVs, digital video players, television decoders and mobile devices. The various streaming contents include television (TV) series, documentaries, anime, feature films and mobile games. Netflix subscription fees range from IDR 54,000 to IDR 186,000 per month.
Initially, Netflix Inc. offered a DVD-by-mail business model, where subscribers rent online DVDs and discs containing content provided by Netflix Inc., and then the DVDs would be mailed to the subscriber’s home address. As of July 2015, Netflix Inc. had more than 130 million subscribers worldwide, including 57.38 million in the United States.
Before Netflix Inc. services could be used by Indonesians, Netflix was blocked by Telkom Group on January 27, 2016 due to Netflix’s license and content that was not in accordance with Indonesian laws. It finally reached an agreement with the Indonesian government not to broadcast prohibited content containing child pornography, terrorism, and violating Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), as well as content that discredits certain groups of people and complies with the Self Regulatory Code for Subscription Video on Demand Industry in ASEAN.
Netflix Inc. finally went public on May 29, 2022, selling 5.5 million shares at US$15.00 per share. Netflix posted its first profit in 2003, earning US$6.5 million on revenues of US$272 million; by 2004, profits had increased to US$49 million on revenues of over US$500 million.
